Little Scraper for Putty and Paint
Description
A favourite of Hans Allbäck for getting into intricate areas without damaging the wood, this handy little scraper has been around in its original form since the 1960s in Scandinavia. It was designed by a famous Norwegian window craftsman, and while the original design has never changed, Allbäck has made some modifications based on their professional experience.
The simple design is made from one single piece of metal, where the front claw end is flat for removing paint and putty from flat surfaces, and the back edge is angled to optimize removing putty from old window frames, especially after softening old putty and paint with the SpotHeater Putty Lamp or the Speedheater Cobra. The Little Scraper can also be used to apply window glazing putty.
The scraper's high quality steel can be easily resharpened to maintain an edge for efficient paint and putty removal. Use a bench grinder to sharpen the scraper so that it fits the profile of the surface. For more complex surfaces, have several scrapers handy with different profiles to make the work much faster.
To sharpen your own profiles:
- Draw the desired profile directly on the scraper with a marker.
- Grind gradually until you reach the desired profile. Check against the surface, and adjust where needed.
- Sharpen periodically to optimize performance.
