Goat Hair for Traditional Lime Plaster
Description
Goat Hair is a durable, natural fibre that is mixed into traditional lime plaster to enhance cohesion and flexibility, give extra strength, and minimise the possibility for shrinking and cracking.
While a variety of animal hair was used historically for different applications, such as the hair of horses, oxen, cattle, or pigs, the unique properties of goat hair make it tough and textured enough to reinforce plaster base coats, while remaining thin enough to be used in finer, single-coat applications.
Uses of goat hair
- Reinforcing lime-based plasters, including material used as a base coat or as a Brown “Leveling” coat.
- Added to single-finish coats of lime plasters for historic authenticity.
- Reinforcement for lime plaster brown coats for modern straw bale, hempcrete, and thick leveling coats for brick and stone buildings.
- Added for more authentic repair or replacement plasters in structures that have existing historic haired plasters.
- A preferred alternative to synthetic fibreglass fibres.
