Description

This test kit is designed to help with learning the nuances of the Grey Pine Tar Vitriol material for staining and protecting surfaces as well as for testing application methods and strategies for a particular project before diving in.

The kit is ideal for anyone at any level who wants to learn the material and do tests before proceeding with a project.

Pine Tar has a long documented history of being used to penetrate and protect wooden surfaces outdoors, while still allowing it to breathe. This product is already pre-mixed with a high-quality gum turpentine to give better penetration and a surface that finishes matte and less sticky.

Kit Contents
Application

Apply Grey Pine Tar Vitriol to new, untreated wood or to wood that was formerly treated with plain iron vitriol.

Clean the surface with Linseed Soap and water to remove dust and dirt from the wood with a brush. Rinse well and allow to dry.

Grey Pine Tar Vitriol comes diluted with a high-quality gum turpentine, so it is ready to use right out of the can. This helps to promote penetration into the wood for a long-lasting result. Stir well before use to ensure the pigment is well mixed.

The approximate spread rate of this premixed Grey Pine Tar Vitriol is 60-100 sqft per litre, depending on the density, smoothness, and overall condition of the substrate. It is also important to consider the environmental conditions. See the Auson Technical Data Sheet below for more detail.

Minimum operating temperature: 10-15ºC on the surface and in the air. Beware of invisible condensation on surfaces below 15ºC.

Drying can take from several days to several weeks depending on the weather and other environmental conditions as well as on the condition of the surface and its porosity.

Note

Grey Pine Tar Vitriol is a product from nature, where the appearance may vary slightly from batch to batch. For larger quantities, it can be a good idea to mix several cans together for better uniformity.

Very dark brown results with the mix

Using the recommended 50/50 mixture of pine tar and linseed oil the results turned out to be a very dark brown, too dark for my desired outcome. Pine tar has a very strong odor that lasts for awhile, that I remember from waxing hickory based XC skis.

Love the pine tar on our deck!

We used the pine tar and boiled linseed oil (50/50) and after seeing it on a neighbors deck were afraid it was going to look too dark. We pressed ahead anyway and were incredulous as to how spectacular the finished deck looked after two coats. We applied the first coat then let is sit a week before applying the second coat. The second coat required 8 days to dry on the side that gets all day sun, and the side that gets only half a day's sun required two full weeks to dry. Admittedly there were two thunderstorms with rain and hail during the drying process which probably slowed the process.

Amazing quality

Amazing quality--can't wait to use it in homemade remedies! I bought some pine tar salve in Finland and am hoping to reproduce it with this high-grade stuff.
